09270006 Well here we are in Slovenia at Postojna cave. This is the river Privka which flows into Postonja cave about 50m to the right of this photograph. |
09270007 The entrance to the cave tour. The size of the tours was a bit mind boggling with 3-400 people on a tour. Here's the 12pm tour which we just missed. See other photos of the entrance building on this page. |
09270008 Photos are not meant to be taken in Postojna cave so all of these photos are taken with the lighting that was on in the cave and no flash photography was used. |
09270012 Stalagmites abound in this area. |
09270014 Interesting roof. |
09270015 Wonderful flowstone with a touch of Lampenflora at the top. This was the only Lampenflora noted on the tour. Considering the number of visitors to the cave 26 million and tourist numbers increasing - its incredible. |
09270016 Some colourful shawls. |
09270017 A nice column. |
09270018 The Brilliant. A very white stalagmite in amoungst the majority of slightly coloured formations. |
09270019 A very large chamber. |
09270020 The famous "human fish" (Proteus Anguinus). Five specimens are kept in this tank for tourists to view for 1 month then they are tagged and returned to their home in the underground river and replaced by 5 others. They live up to 100 years. |
09270022 Sam at the underground tourist kiosk in the massive concert hall chamber. |
09270023 Near the entrance to the cave the river Privka cascades along. |
09270024 Sam after the cave tour at the entrance/exit to Postonja Cave. The 2km train ride through the cave at the start of the tour is amazing. If you would like to see more take the Postojna Cave virtual tour it has excellent 360 degree panorama photos of the cave. |
09270025 Sam on the bridge over the Privka river. |
09270026 Sam amoung the trees and walkways near Postonja Cave and beside the Privka river. |
Cnv00063 In the UK now at Cheddar Gorge. |
CNV00064 Another shot of the chedder cliffs. |
CNV00065 Just started the tour of Gough's Cave. Its a self guided tour and the lights are on constantly. Hence some of the worst Lampenflora that I have seen in a cave. See other photos on this page. |
CNV00066 More Lampenflora in Gough's Cave. |
CNV00068 One of my pet hates in tourist caves. An artifical pool turned into a wishing well full of coins. Too bad about the effects on the formations and any cave fauna. |
Cnv00069 Gough's cave does have some good formation with excellent colouration. |
Cnv00070 Here's another one An artifical pool in Gough's cave - it does make a nice reflection! |
Cnv00071 And another one - an artifical pool in Gough's Cave. Too bad about the effects on the formations. |
Cnv00072 Some good flowstone in Gough's Cave. |
CNV00073 Sam next to a very colourful flowstone in Gough's Cave. |
Cnv00074 Gough's cave with some good formation with excellent colouration. Visitors are "guided" through the cave using numbered stations and an audio devise which tells you information about the features of the cave. |
CNV00075 Interesting floor in Gough's Cave. Rippled concrete on most of the floor but here it surrounds a small flowstone left sitting on a breccia. |
CNV00076 More Lampenflora in Gough's Cave. This plant is about 40cm across. |
CNV00077 More Lampenflora in Gough's Cave. |
CNV00079 Outside at a coffee shop here's the river after it has emerged from the cave system. |
